As the New York Knicks continue their search for a new head coach ahead of the 2025–26 NBA season, James Borrego, current assistant coach with the New Orleans Pelicans, is expected to interview for the position, according to The Athletic’s James L. Edwards III.

Borrego adds to an already diverse pool of candidates under review by the Knicks’ front office, which is said to favor Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown as frontrunners. Still, New York is casting a wide net, keeping its options open while monitoring Jason Kidd’s uncertain situation in Dallas.

A veteran NBA mind known for his analytical approach and offensive design, Borrego has a long résumé. He spent several years as an assistant to Gregg Popovich in San Antonio and served as head coach of the Charlotte Hornets from 2018 to 2022, compiling a 138–163 record.

Borrego was a finalist for the Lakers’ head coaching job in 2024, but the team ultimately hired JJ Redick. Despite that setback, his name has remained prominent in coaching circles.

He’s currently an assistant on Willie Green’s staff in New Orleans, though the Pelicans endured a brutal 21–61 season—the worst record in the Western Conference.

Borrego’s ties to Creative Artists Agency (CAA) could also work in his favor, as CAA maintains longstanding connections with Knicks executive leadership. Those ties, combined with his NBA head coaching experience and developmental strengths, make him a viable option even if not the presumed favorite.

New York is coming off its best season in over two decades, finishing 51–31 and reaching the Eastern Conference Finals before falling to the Indiana Pacers in six games. With rising expectations and a talented roster led by Jalen Brunson, the next coaching hire is seen as pivotal to the franchise’s continued ascension.
